Yeovilton Air Day 2018

This year’s RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day is billed to be one of the best ever, with some of the world’s most formidable and exciting aircraft in the line-up. Over 40,000 visitors are expected to visit the home of the Fleet Air Arm, and for Navy Wings Supporters there is no better opportunity to see your support in action.

The programme includes a dynamic showcase of the future of the Fleet AIr Arm and as a mark of remembrance for the 100th anniversary of the First World War, this year’s line-up will feature many historic naval aircraft, including iconic aircraft from the Navy Wings collection. For the first time since Korea, the Navy Wings Sea Fury T.20, piloted by Lt Cdr Chris Gotke will display with the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron’s MiG-15UTI. As part of a tribute to the events of August 1952, when a Sea Fury FB.11 famously shot a MiG-15 over North Korea, the two aircraft will perform various scenarios including an exciting tail-chase. Sea Fury pilot Brian ‘Smoo’ Ellis, a former Sub-Lieutenant on 802 Naval Air Squadron who was involved in the dogfight, will be there to see this very special tribute display.

Leading up to the Air Day, RNAS Yeovilton enjoys practice displays from the visiting aircraft which have included superb displays from the Fairey Swordfish, Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet and a solo Wildcat, the displays provide an exciting taste of what to expect on Air Day. One of the many eagerly anticipated items at this year’s Air Day, the CF-18 Hornet gave an exhilarating, high energy routine, the Wildcat showed off flares and the magnificent Swordfish display highlighted the importance of remembering history to influence the future of aviation, this was reflected in a surprise visit from the F-35B on their first visit to a UK Royal Naval Air Station.

Enthusiasts can walk through the history of aviation with a special line up of  the Navy Wings Collection of aircraft, a wonderful tour with aircraft veterans. Tickets are available on the day from the Navy Wings Merchandise stand situated on the flight line.

Alongside the magnificent five hour flying display there will also be a huge array of ground attractions including the Navy Wings merchandising marquee selling our new and extensive range of clothing, models, pictures and memorabilia, items can also be purchased via our online Flight Store.
